Erdogan Launches the Turkish Electric Car
Turkey officially announced the birth of the first homemade Turkish electric car on the 27th of December 2019, at a grand ceremony organized by the auto projects group, TOGG, in Gebze area of Kocaeli State, Turkey. With the presence of a group of important political and economic figures in the country, the most prominent of whom is the President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkish electric car: a dream come true
The local electric car was revealed during the opening of the largest "Technology Valley" in Kocaeli province, by the Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology, Mustafa Varank, with the aim of enhancing economic and technological investment in Turkey.
During the ceremony, a general introduction was presented about the electric car, which is manufactured with pure Turkish technologies, works with an autonomous-driving system, and equipped with an always-connected Internet connection. The car is designed to meet the needs, desires, and demands of the Turkish community, through a large statistical study that preceded the implementation of the project.
The Turkish President accompanied by the Minister of Industry and Technology, Mustafa Varank, drove the first model of the Turkish electric car, and during his speech about the first model of the local Turkish car in Gebze area of Kocaeli State, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “Turkey is witnessing a historical day as its dream turned into reality after 60 years, through showing the first two prototypes of the local Turkish car for the first time".
The Turkish president pointed out to the great effort made by the Turkish engineers to complete the local car project, "we always aspired to have a car made with the efforts of our designers and engineers and produced with local technologies, this car will let the whole world know the name of Turkey." he said.
He continued, saying: "Our national electric car is environment-friendly, where the car will not pollute the environment at all, as it operates completely without emissions, and we own its intellectual and industrial property completely."
Erdogan stressed that Turkey is no longer just a market for new technologies, but it has become among the countries that produce and export to the entire world and continued by saying: "We did not obtain a license or authorization from any party for the local car project, we define all kinds of technical characteristics of the car ourselves, and that Turkey's infrastructure for charging the car's battery will be fully ready by 2022. "
Regarding the volume of car production in Turkey, Mr. Erdogan said: "We have made a quantum leap in the economic sector through investing in the infrastructure, and we have been able to increase the volume of car production in Turkey to more than 1.5 million cars."
It is worth noting that selecting the time 14:53 exactly to launch the car is related to the date of the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul in 1453, noting also that the first video published about the car was at 19:23 referring to the anniversary of founding the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Bursa, The Turkish Electric Vehicle Factory
Through a decision issued by the President of the Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the marketing committee for the electric car project said that the factory intended for the production of this type of car will be in Bursa city, with the full support of the Turkish government, the marketing committee also indicated that Turkey will provide governmental insurance with an exemption from consumption and value-added tax For 10 years.
The committee noted that the production of the electric car project in Turkey will go through 3 phases in a period of 15 years, besides, the total investment value of its production reached 22 billion Turkish liras, and it is expected to contribute in strengthening the country's economy by 50 billion euros and reduce the current account deficit by 7 Billion euros, in addition to providing thousands of job opportunities for the engineers in the project.
According to information from the Marketing and Supply Committee, the car's serial production is planned to start in 2022, and then two or three years later, it will be opened to the foreign markets, the most important of which is the European Union markets.
The Electric Car in Turkey
According to the committee, the local car is scheduled to enter the market at first with an electric SUV, which is a compact family car category, then they will increase the number of models to 5 in the coming years.
